“First Meeting of Revived SIR Area 2”
Computer User Group

With 47 SIR members in attendance at the August 21st meeting, Floyd Skelton summarized the efforts Dick Curry and he made to reinvigorate the SIR Area 2 Computer Users Group, for which all are grateful.  As outlined, he and Dick are co-chairs with shared responsibilities.  Floyd will be responsible for the logistics of each meeting. The intent is to identify volunteers on a rotating basis to spread the work around.  The meeting was well attended with many who had not been involved in the initial group.  It was agreed that the monthly dues would be $5 to cover rental costs ($50/meeting), refreshments, name labels and eventually some equipment to aid in program presentations.  As an incentive to encourage volunteerism, volunteers will not be asked to pay.

Dick will be responsible for the programs and said that programs would be generally focused around three separate components, questions and answers, a presentation, and great websites.

Dick’s presentation focused on security issues, and emphasized the magnitude of the problem.  He called attention to the varied sources of problems e.g., attachments, grandchildren using a computer, programs of unknown reliability being installed, etc.  He discussed the various problem areas, trojan horses which when cleaned up are ok, worms which contain nothing useful should be deleted, spyware including cookies which are less intrusive, hoaxes (malware) which contain both truth and fiction and should be deleted.  He provided a list of sites to check on malware, and warned not to forward emails without checking authenticity.  He urged everyone to install an antivirus program (updated regularly) and a firewall, check browser security setting (medium). He also recommended replacing the antivirus program at least every two years to get an updated program.  He also urged getting MS security patches whenever they become available, and uncheck autocomplete in your browser.

The October meeting on the third Thursday will include a presentation by Leonard Krause, Rossmoor and a continuation of the August meeting.
