“Comp USA Training and Teaching Programs”

Presented by Vincent Brown of Comp USA

Dick Curry started with an announcement of the programs for the next three meetings. July and August will be devoted to a very popular subject, Digital Photography. The September program will be equally interesting, Wireless Computing and Home Networking.

He then introduced our topic for today, CompUSA Training and Teaching Programs.  They explained that CompUSA is the largest training center in the country of its kind. Classes are presented both in- store and on- line. The on-line catalog contains over 1500 listings. Their brochure states: " Get the Knowledge and Hands-on Experience You Need With CompUSA Training".

They offer flexible training that helps you expand your computing skills at your own pace. You can visit www.compusa.com/training and get fast, easy access to a variety of courses---including computer and technical training, as well as business skills.

Classroom sessions typically run from 9am to 4pm and cost $129 each. Packages are available and cost less. Each student has a computer and is given a book.  On-line classes are available 24/7.The material mirrors the classroom work. On-line is good for just in time problems. You are able to turn to any portion of the material to answer a current problem. The cost is $49.95 for 6 months and covers 250 topics. Course material is also available on CD for off line study.

Vincent Brown stated that our CUG group is entitled to a discount at the Concord store. Page him in the store. He will show you the product in which you are interested and tell you what discounts are applicable.

Other services available include: a one hour in-house class with the purchase of a product; and service available either on-site or in-store for equipment problems.  A number of free class certificates were raffled off. Your correspondent was among the lucky ones.

The Ultimate Trouble Shooter

Presented by Dick Curry

After thanking the CompUSA presenters Dick discussed a program called the ULTIMATE TROUBLE SHOOTER. This is available for download at www.answersthatwork.com  It is a utility that finds what programs are running on your computer at startup and advises if they can be safely removed. A free version is available for limited use but Dick recommended buying the $20 version He gave a demo .The program works with the following TABS: Task running, Services, Hardware, Start up, and Housekeeping. It also helps clear out other unneeded files such as Temp Internet files. He thought that the program uses a lot of memory.

Dick has information about discounts for Microsoft publications. Which he will provide later.

The volunteers for this meeting were: Coffee Masters: Chris Satterthwaite, and Vic Moore; Set-up Tear- down Chairman: Lo McCarley with Bob Brady, Dan Fowler, Dick Chaffee and Bill Turnquist.
