“Computer Maintenance Software” Presented by Gene Barlow
Gene Barlow was our Computer Users Group (CUG) guest speaker at the September meeting. He was accompanied by his wife, Linda. Gene began his career working for IBM in User Group Relations. He next worked for Power Quest, continuing to focus on CUGs, but when Symantec purchased Power Quest and did not express interest in CUGs he began representing Acronis, WhiteCanyon and Spearit Software. Acronis Disk Director Suite 9.0 - Shows you various ways to organize your hard drive and provides tools to make this easy, including running more than one operating system and migrating to a new operating system or a whole new computer. Does everything Partition Magic does. Spearit Move Me - Moves old programs and data to a new computer. Gene pointed out that some programs may not run after a move and may need an update. Discovering your Hard Drive - Training CD. Security - White Canyon Wipe Drive - Completely clears the drive by overwriting with 1 and 0s. The drive will still be usable but must run from a bootable disk. White Canyon Media Wiper - Clears data from other storage products. WhiteCanyon Secure Clean will not touch OS files or active data files. Backups. Acronis True Image - Similar to Drive Image V2i and Ghost) creates a full system image. Backups can be saved to a variety of products, e.g. CD/DVD, etc., but not recommended. A better option would be another hard drive, external (preferred) or a network. An inexpensive external drive can be constructed by purchasing an internal drive and a case separately. Gene stressed the imaging approach to backing up as superior and recommended regular full image backups interspersed with regular incremental backups of files that have changed. He recommended that prior to each image backup the disk be "cleaned up" and "defragmented." In addition, the drive should be large enough to accept a number of full image backups, before filling up. Image backups are compressed to about 50% of the original size. Linda Barlow had various software products for sale at the end of the program. In addition order forms were available.
