“Cleaning Your Registry with RegsupremePro” Presented by Dick Curry Dick Curry presented a brief summary of Active X controls, Java applets and Scripts in as much as they relate to security issues. Active X controls are small programs that enhance the functionality of a web site. They are useful in that they enable one to play games, view animation, etc., but are risky because they have full access to your computer. Java applets are independent applications that run in memory and are less risky. Scripts are small bits of code that run in your computer to enhance the function-ality of a web site and carry still less risk. Scripts are embedded in a web page; they are not downloaded as separate program files. You can view Active X and Java applets that are installed on your computer by going to Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, General tab, Settings and then View Objects. The main topic for the day was RegSupremePro, a Finnish program by Macecraft that is a Registry cleaner. Windows has an editor of its own (Regedit) and another one mentioned was Registry Mechanics. RegSupremePro is available for less then $20. Prior to discussing RegSupremePro Dick provided a brief summary about the registry itself. The registry includes “five root keys:” HKey_Classes_Root, HKey_Current_User, HKey_Local_Machine, HKey _Users, and HKey_Current_Config. Each contains subkeys in a hierarchical arrangement and each of the subkeys can contain subkeys on their own. Each key contains at least one value. All values other than the default values always include the name, the data type, and data. Editing the registry is not something to be taken lightly. One should use software designed for that purpose (as listed above) and by all means back up your computer before starting. Dick listed several backup strategies, but he prefers the system restore command in Me and XP. When applications or hardware are installed on your computer your registry is changed in a variety of places to accommodate the new program or hardware, but uninstalling that program, even with the uninstall that came with the device or hardware does not remove everything from the registry. As a result, over time, the computer will slow down unless the registry is cleaned up using a register editor such RegSupremePro. Dick then demonstrated the use of this program and he will put the power point slides he used on the CUG website. |
