“STORING AND ORGANIZING YOUR DIGITAL IMAGES” by Phil Goff Phil began his presentation by putting out for inspection a book that he thought would be a good reference for Photo Shop Elements 4.0 by Scott Kelby. The important point is to use photo-organizing software to make it easy to view, manipulate and enjoy your digital photos and scanned images. He remarked that there are many possible programs to choose from. He uses Photo Shop Elements 4.0 and has checked out Picasa2. The important basic step is to establish an easy to remember folder structure. Set this up in Windows Explorer, preferably on its own partition so that all items are in one place and easy to backup. You then direct your software to place your photos there. The first part of the presentation was devoted to a look at Picasa2. He calls it an elegant and handy free download from Google. It may be enough if your organizational requirements are fairly simple. PSE 4.0 is huge. It can easily handle 50,000 photos with complex cataloging. Phil is running both on his machine. They do not interfere with each other; however, if you use one to move pictures on your hard drive the other will not know where they are. Phil then detailed how to use PSE 4.0 Organizer. (Photo editing will be covered later.) He described it as the flagship product of Adobe Systems and widely recognized as the industry standard. The Organizer creates a database of thumbnails of your pictures. These are grouped in one or more catalogs. As you import pictures you can name them and browse to the explorer folder where they are to be stored. In Organizer you can Tag photos for easy retrieval. You create a hierarchy starting with a major category e.g. Trips. Then, as many sub categories as you wish e.g. one for all the trips in years 2000 to 2010 and one for Trips in just the year 2005 then a tag for the trip to Capitola in 2005. The hierarchy can be compressed or expanded as much as you would like. Don’t forget to backup your catalogs. Phil uses Ghost to make an image of his hard drive weekly. Organizer has a backup utility but it is rather awkward to use. He closed with a gee-wiz feature of the new version 4.0 of PSE. The program can recognize the face in a picture and use that to locate the photo. Computer Q&A session by Dick Curry There was discussion about using Windows Utility for Backing up and reserving one drive for this purpose. Additional topics follow. Downloading today’s slides may cause you to be timed out with a dialup connection due to the huge file size. There is a program that pings in the background to fool the IP into thinking that there is activity. Windows Power Point Viewer can be down loaded from Microsoft to read the slides in the presentation. The SpyBot spyware program gives an error message when trying to update the program. The solution is to change the download mirror site location to one of the other available settings. To do this click the down arrow adjacent to the second icon from the left on the menu bar on the Update window. Then select a different site from the default selection (usually BN FileForum - Global) offered.
