Genealogy’s Family Tree Maker 2006 Presenter Bob Wolf (Branch 116) A presentation by Bob Wolf (branch 116), president of the Mt Diablo Genealogy Society was a follow-up to his very informative genealogy presentation of last November. Bob's presentation covered the use of Family Tree Maker 2006 to record, document and present information about ancestors. It also contained information regarding the inclusion of other documents and photographs to enhance the reports. Genealogy research results in a large accumulation of data and documents that have to be organized to be useful. Bob unlocked the mysteries of Family Tree Maker and showed how to do that. The Family Data chart is central to the program. Bob displayed this form and explained the use of its toolbar that allows you to access the following (the use of each is fairly self evident from its name): It all begins by entering the family data on the form including names, birth dates and places, marriage date and place, children’s names, birth dates and places. Adding information brings up other forms to add parents data and grandparents data etc. There is a “Scrapbook” icon, which allows you to add a picture or other image to the database. Web search accesses all databases in Ancestry.com. You must have a current paid subscription. A web merge wizard incorporates the new data after you have verified its validity. The results of all of your work are displayed in Tree Charts and Reports available in a number of different formats. Q and A Session by Dean Steichen Question. What to do about email attachments that when opened contain nothing but Gibberish. Answer. A lengthy discussion ensued with a number of possible solutions: Open the attachment with “save as” in Word Pad not in Note Pad. Dean uses Word Pad regularly. It is easier to use than Word for simple messages. Check the extension of the attachment and assign it to a program to open. To do this go to Folder Options, register file types. E.g. if it is .doc this is associated with MS Word. Avoid attachments embedded in the message. Additional advantage, less spam. |
